Immigration reform deserves careful scrutiny

The new Immigration Bill has the potential to be a strategic piece of legislation and the business community will scrutinise it carefully, says Business NZ.

Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said the Bill had been preceded by lengthy consultation and this had resulted in positive changes including strengthened border security and a simplified visa system.

“A strengthened, updated and fit-for-purpose immigration law that upholds border security while facilitating the arrival of skilled, talented people is in the interests of business as well as in the general public interest,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“There may be some concerns regarding employer compliance, since under the Bill employers could be expected to ask all prospective employees, including New Zealanders, whether they are legally entitled to work, and to keep records of employees’ passports and birth certificates.

“This may result in a compliance burden that is disproportionate to the relatively small number of illegal workers.

“Business NZ will provide analysis of the Bill and raise relevant issues with the select committee on behalf of employers.”
