Major players in the ICT sector met in Wellington yesterday to discuss setting up an information communications technology (ICT) industry body association.

The half-day session, hosted by Business NZ, followed an initial meeting in May led by Microsoft’s managing director Kevin Ackhurst, where potential for the representative body was first discussed.

It has been agreed a working group will be formed to continue work around the industry body’s potential formal establishment.

In the interim, Business NZ chief executive Phil O’Reilly, who facilitated the day, will be the main contact for questions about the industry body.

Mr O’Reilly said it was a useful and constructive meeting with more than 30 companies represented.

“They recognise this sector is a significant contributor to New Zealand’s economy and it needs a representative voice.

“However, no firm decisions have been made and it was agreed further discussion is needed before more concrete action is taken,” said Mr O’Reilly.

“I’m looking forward to engaging with the sector as we work towards the possible establishment of the association and the opportunities for future work.”
