Guidelines for development contributions sought

Better council treatment of property developers would help housing affordability, says BusinessNZ.

Submitting on the Local Government Amendment Bill (3), BusinessNZ endorsed its provisions on development contributions.

BusinessNZ economist John Pask said councils were increasingly asking property developers for development contributions, with few guidelines to ensure this was transparent or consistent across different councils.

“A coordinated approach is needed so all councils adopt a consistent, transparent approach to development agreements with property developers. Also needed is an appeal process for grievances about the level or appropriateness of development contributions required,” Mr Pask said.
