Investment in education leadership well placed
Targeted investment in principals and teachers is a strategic move that could significantly improve student skill levels, says BusinessNZ.
Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said funding for leadership and expert teaching in schools would be well placed, as research shows the quality of school leaders and teachers has a big impact on student achievement.
“A resulting outcome of higher skilled people and a more competitive economy would benefit everyone,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“It will be important for there to be a focus on skills relevant to enterprise, including maths, science and technology – having dedicated Expert Teachers in these areas is positive.
“The higher income potential and greater career opportunities are also likely to make education positions more attractive in the labour market, which should help with attracting and retaining top talent in schools.”
Mr O’Reilly said it would be critical to ensure the additional investment does result in improved student achievement in skills that are valued in the labour market today and in the future.
