KiwiRail has a key role in Aotearoa’s transition to a net zero carbon emissions economy, with every tonne of freight carried by rail having 70 percent fewer carbon emissions than heavy road freight. Rail helps to reduce congestion in our cities, reduce carbon emissions and air pollutants, improve road safety and lower road maintenance costs.

KiwiRail boosts regional economies, increasing productivity and creating jobs by delivering goods to people and ports and bringing tourists to regional towns and cities.
