Creative thinking around housing affordability welcomed

Competition in consenting activities should be considered, along with other options, in the coming review of the Resource Management Act, says BusinessNZ.

Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says the new Government has signalled it will look at many options to help achieve better outcomes for people trying to get into the housing market.

“The option of competing consenting agencies being accredited to share the responsibilities currently borne by councils should be given consideration,” Mr O’Reilly said.

“It’s clear that new thinking is needed to help achieve more house builds and more affordable housing.

“Getting onto the first rung of the property market is important not only for young people seeking to own a house, but also for those needing to establish capital for a new business. The current resource management system is not effectively enabling either of these.

“New thinking around resource management law and its administration is welcome.”
