More opportunities for practical skills a step in the right direction

BusinessNZ has welcomed moves to increase opportunities for practical skills training in Trade Academies.

The Education Minister yesterday announced additional Trade Academies, broadening the range of learning options available to young people.

BusinessNZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said these were a welcome development for employers.

“Young people will be able to more easily see how their learning relates to jobs and careers are well as further learning opportunities.”

He said key skills like literacy, numeracy, problem solving and team work needed to be embedded in these as in other programmes at secondary and tertiary level.

“Broadening the options available for young people also means we must improve the quality of careers information advice and guidance available.”

Tertiary providers, industry training organisations, employers and schools needed to work together to deliver the best outcome for the student, he said.

“We encourage the Government and Trade Academy-led providers to work with the business community in implementing Trade Academies.

“Progress towards this flagship programme has been slow but we’re pleased to finally see the broadening of options available to many more young people.”
