BusinessNZ calls for stable government and clear economic direction

Last night’s preliminary election results put National, ACT and New Zealand First in the strongest position to form the next government. The three parties have a narrow majority on the preliminary count, with special votes still to be counted.

BusinessNZ CEO Katherine Rich said business leaders understand that negotiations take time, particularly when the final allocation of seats could be affected by special votes.

“What matters is that the eventual government is stable, has a coherent programme and can build confidence about the direction of enduring economic policy.

“BusinessNZ encourages political leaders to approach the next stage constructively and in the wider interests of New Zealand. We will engage in good faith with whichever grouping ultimately forms the government.”

Mrs Rich acknowledged the contribution of senior ministers who look unlikely to be returned, including Finance Minister Nicola Willis, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop and Justice and Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith.

“The past three years have presented significant external challenges for New Zealand’s economy, and we recognise the considerable effort and commitment these ministers have brought to their portfolios during a particularly demanding period.

“Their contribution to public life and the work they have undertaken in challenging circumstances deserves recognition and thanks.”

Mrs Rich paid special tribute to Speaker Gerry Brownlee, who will also be leaving Parliament following the election.

“Over three decades in Parliament, Gerry served as an MP, a minister and Speaker of the House. He brought sound judgement, a deep understanding of Parliament and a distinctive dry wit to public life.

“Whatever the eventual shape of the Government, BusinessNZ’s Election Priorities 2026 sets out the durable policy settings we believe New Zealand needs to lift productivity, strengthen investment and create the conditions for businesses and the wider economy to thrive for all New Zealanders.”
